For Christmas a friend gave me National Geographic: Journeys of a Lifetime. This has now become my dream to-do list. I adore traveling and seeing new places. The more exotic the better. There are a few places on the list located in and around India, which I will save until later, due to my intolerance for curry. I had a piece of shrimp off a friends plate at PF Changs once and instantly felt sick, hence my hesitance to visit a place that puts curry in EVERYTHING!
In this portion of my blog I'd like to check my travels off the list, with stories and pictures from each adventure. Tonight I'll start with an easy one: walking across the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City. Being from the west coast, I've been blessed to visit the Big Apple many times in the past few years since my parents only live about 90 minutes away. My mom's birthday was over Labor Day weekend, so my dad flew me out to surprise her, leaving my kids and hubby at home. The three of us were having an uber fantastic time when my mom suggested we walk the bridge. She was an avid Ugly Betty fan at the time and wanted to somehow channel her. Always up for an adventure I led the way to the historic bridge. We took our time so the trip took almost a full hour, but we enjoyed every minute of it.
The bridge was built in 1855, but didn't get underway until 1869. It took 14 years to build and cost 27 men their lives. There are special plaques and information along the way that tell all about the landmark. The views of Manhattan are spectacular, and it's a trip to see the cars driving underneath your feet. I fancy myself a somewhat educated person, but I cannot wrap my brain around the engineering of this masterpiece. Next time you are in New York this fieldtrip is a must. I can't wait to take my kids when they get a little older.
