Do you hear that? Total silence. Well, almost. The fan on my computer is unusually loud, and the giant clock behind me is ticking away the seconds before daughter #2 gets home from school. I love my family. My husband is a truly amazing man. My girls bring me sheer joy with just a simple smile. I've even grown fond of the little dog who has proved to be a great heating blanket since we've turned down the thermostat to get a handle on our outrageous utility bills. My brother lives in the basement, which I also love. It seems we've always got a family member living with us, which I know would drive most people nuts but it doesn't bother me. Some "neighbors" have been better than others, but I've enjoyed the extra time with each of them. My brother and I didn't grow up together - in fact I didn't meet him until I was almost 20. He is a pretty great "neighbor", and I love that my girls get to spend time with their uncle. He takes them out once a week and they look forward to it.
But I digress. Back to the silence. My husband works from home, my brother has an odd school schedule, and my kids are always underfoot. When 4 out of the 5 people that live in this house are off taking part in shaping the world, it is me time. Not that I do anything differently. As soon as I finish writing this I'll shower and get ready for the day. Then it's paperwork for our business, and then getting ready for the party of the year on Saturday. But for now I feel free. I feel happy. I feel peaceful. I can do whatever I want, but I won't. I'll do what needs to be done, for that is what a mother does. It's just more peaceful to work when it's just you, the loud computer fan, and a gorgeous clock.
